Who: John Edwards

What: His new book, 'Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives,'" collects nearly 60 touching stories from personalities as diverse as General Tommy Franks, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Senator John Glenn and celebrity chef Mario Battali. They share their personal tales of how where they came from defined who they became.

Background: Former senator Edwards was the Democratic candidate for vice president, running with John Kerry in 2004. He has since formed the One America Committee and was appointed director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.


Who: Alan King

What: Lieutenant Colonel King's new book, 'Twice Armed: An American Soldier's Battle for Hearts and Minds in Iraq,' describes how he orchestrated the capture or surrender of nearly a dozen of the most wanted villains from Saddam Hussein's regime. The book takes it title from Plato's ancient words of wisdom: "We are twice armed if we fight with faith."

Background: King is the former head of the Coalition Provisional Authority's Tribal Affairs and Sunni outreach programs in Iraq. He is one of the war's most decorated officers.

What: Yoo's latest book, 'War by Other Means: An Insider's Account of the War on Terror,' takes a close look at the Bush administration's track record since Sept. 11, 2001.

Background: As a member of the White House Office of Legal Counsel, the analyses by Yoo and his colleagues led to many of Bush's most controversial policies, from the detentions at Guantánamo Bay to the warrant-less wiretapping program.


Who: John Rennie

What: The 2006 Scientific American 50, a tally of the year's top contributions to science and technology, will be discussed.

Background: A Yale University graduate, Rennie worked for several years at Harvard Medical School and as a science writer before joining the staff of Scientific American in 1989. Five years later, he became only the seventh editor-in-chief in the 161-year history of the magazine.

Who: Richard Labunski

What: As the author of 'James Madison and the Struggle for the Bill of Rights,' Labunski chronicles this historic episode in the early political life of America. His text details how the actions Madison undertook in a newborn nation helped secure the protections we take for granted in our lives today.

Background: Labunski is a professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. He has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a J.D. from Seattle University School of Law. Labunski has also authored four previous books, plus numerous journal articles and newspaper commentaries.

Who: William Simpson

What: As the author of 'The Prince: The Secret Story of the World's Most Intriguing Royal, Prince Bandar bin Sultan,' Simpson takes an intimate look at one of the most powerful men in international politics.

Background: The author was a classmate of Prince Bandar at the Royal Air Force College, in Cranwell, England, where they became friends through a mutual interest in fencing during their officer training. Simpson founded and was CEO of an Internet company, and also worked with a Mayfair-based hedge fund as President of North American Operations. After his retirement, Simpson undertook this biography with the cooperation of Prince Bandar. Simpson lives in the United Kingdom.


Who: Robert Spencer

What: The author's latest book, 'The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World's Most Intolerant Religion,' takes an unflinching look at the beloved prophet of the Islamic world.

Background: Robert Spencer is an American writer focusing on Islam. He is the author of six books on topics related to Islam and terrorism. He is the founder and director of the Jihad Watch and Dhimmi Watch websites, which concentrate on Islamic terrorism and related events.

Bohannon To Receive Hackes Award

Jim is set to receive the Hackes Award from the Washington D.C.-based chapter of the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA-DC) on Nov. 28 in the Capital City.

The honor, which is named for former NBC correspondent and founding RTNDA-DC board member Peter Hackes, is bestowed annually on one person who has gone above and beyond in their betterment of the broadcast news industry in the Washington, D.C. area. The Hackes Award is the highest plaudit given by the RTNDA.

"Jim Bohannon has been selected for his excellence, intelligence, wit, and professionalism on and off the air, and his tireless efforts to educate, inform, and improve the nation and the D.C. metropolitan area," says the group's president, Connie Lawn.
